Introduction to Pranayama
Workshop with Sue. Pranayama, the formal practice of controlling the breath, lies at the heart of yoga. It has a mysterious power to soothe and revitalize a tired body, a flagging spirit, or a wild mind. The ancient sages taught that prana, the vital force circulating through us, can be cultivated and channeled through a panoply of breathing exercises. In the process, the mind is calmed, rejuvenated, and uplifted. Pranayama serves as an important bridge between the outward, active practices of yoga—like asana—and the internal, surrendering practices that lead us into deeper states of meditation. We cleanse the central channels of the body, and find more connection to our true selves. We learn that with a connection to breath, we become more calm, able to handle life’s challenges with more dignity and grace. Our breath is what guides us into our Asana’s, our breath is what enables us to dive deeper into our own personal practice. A slow breathing rate keeps the heart stronger and better nourished and contributes to a longer life. Deep breathing also enhance dynamism, vitality and general well-being. We will explore deeply Ujjayi Pranayama, Kapphalabati Pranayama, and Nadi Shodenen Pranayama. After each practice we will rest in Savasana, allowing us to experience the power of our inner most breath.
